Henderson, C. + Jervoise, E., 1938, Old Devon Bridges, 89 (Monograph). SDV2296.

The present Hele Bridge is probably early nineteenth century. However, a bridge is mentioned in a will of 1425 in which Thomas Dunham left money for its upkeep.

Hele Bridge is recorded in the will of Thomas Dunham, 1425, who left money for its repair. The present bridge is probably early 19th century (citing Jervoise 1938).

Hele Bridge. Road bridge over River Torridge. Circa mid C19. Sandstone ashlar. Three arches with projecting keystones. The outer two segmental, the central one roundheaded. Two rounded cutwaters which extend up into semi-hexagonal refuges which are rusticated in central section. Cambered stringcourse and parapet.

Site visit 12th April 2007. Two small iron plaques fixed to the parapets on the east and west sides, at the southern and northern ends of the bridge respectively. Dating to the c.1980s, the plaques are inscribed Devon County Council/Hele Bridge/1811, with the Devon logo.
