Two pits circa 50 to 60 metres across were visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1971 and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
The visible earthworks correspond partly with plots depicted on the OS First Edition 25 inch map as orchards, the subtle earthworks extending beyond the orchard boundaries.
This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of extractive pits that had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century, and that those areas of pit not suited to other cultivation were subsequently reused for orchards. The smaller pit remained obscured from view on aerial photographs by dense woodland in 2014 but the larger eastern pit can be seen as an earthwork.
