An irregularly shaped pit was visible as a subtle earthwork on aerial photographs of 1971 and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. The eastern edge of the visible earthworks corresponds with two small pit features, one probably a pond, depicted in this location on 19th century mapping.
This supports the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of a larger extractive pit that had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century and had been partly levelled. The extant pits remain obscured from view by dense tree cover on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014.
