South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

Plot 972 was depicted as scrub or copse, named as Wibble Coppice.

The visible earthwork did not correspond with any depicted pit.

Pits were visible as a earthworks under tree cover.

Irregularly shaped pits form a D-shaped hollow circa 95 metres across was visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
The visible earthworks did not correspond with any pit features depicted in this location on the 19th century mapping available to the survey, but fell within plot 972 on the Tithe Map fof Membury, named as Wibble Coppice. The pits were visible as earthwork under tree cover on aerial photographs of 1947 and were entirely obscured by trees on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2016.
This might support the interpretation that the visible earthworks are the remains of extractive pits that had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century and were subsequently utilised as woodland.
