Possible tree-planting banks of a former post-medieval to 19th century orchard are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998-2014, at Higher Ashculm, Hemyock. The earthworks are located within land parcel 797 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe map and is recorded as ‘Great Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. An orchard is also depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the late 19th century. The earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established for increased soil depth and improved drainage, are east to west and northwest to southeast aligned and occupy an area of approximately 0.30 hectares of west facing slope, within a single land parcel.
