Former extractive pits of possible post-medieval to mid-19th century date are visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, to the southwest of Higher Ashculm, Hemyock. The two adjacent earthworks are sub-oval in shape, with that to the west measuring approximately 55m in length by 27m in width and that to the east approximately 25m in length by 16m in width. The western earthwork corresponds with land parcel 801 on the Parish Tithe map which is recorded as ‘Pit Orchard ‘on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. Orchards are also depicted in the location of the two earthworks on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pits had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century.
