An irregularly shaped pit circa 80 by 90 metres across was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards, up to and including digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2006.
The visible earthwork does not correspond with any pit shown on the 19th century maps available to the survey. It is interpreted as the remains of a former extractive pit that had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century.
