Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

An irregularly shaped pit circa 20 by 15 metres across was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1971 onwards, up to and including digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014.
The visible earthwork does not correspond with any pit shown on the 19th century maps available to the survey, but does fall within an area depicted as an orchard. It is interpreted as the remains of a former extractive pit that had passed out of use prior to the mid-to-late 19th century and was subsequently reused as an orchard. Possible traces of narrow tree banks were visible as slight earthworks across the plot on aerial photographs of 1989 but could not be identified on any other images available to the survey.
