A former extractive pit of possible post-medieval to mid-19th century date is visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2008, to the northeast of Applehayes, Clayhidon. The sub-oval shaped earthwork measures approximately 45m in length by 20m in width. The earthwork pit is located within land parcel 243 on the Parish Tithe map and is recorded as ‘Chards Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. This supports the interpretation that the extractive pit had likely passed out of use by the mid-19th century and subsequently occupied by the site of an orchard.
