Linear and curvilinear banks approximately 5 to 10 metres wide were visible on aerial photographs of 2000 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, west of Sycamore Farm, Chardstock parish. The banks are interpreted as the remains of former field boundaries and possible enclosures.
The visible earthworks do not match any boundaries depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey and are not in keeping with the post-medieval character of the surrounding field pattern. They therefore predate the post-medieval enclosure and are possibly evidence of an earlier, probably medieval episode of enclosure on Bewley Down.
