Summary

The remains of ridges probably made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage from the post-medieval to mid-19th century date were visible as low parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured from 1998 to 2014, west of West Barn, Membury parish.

The remains of parallel ridges up to circa 5 metres apart were visible as earthwork banks on two orientations over an area of circa 0.2ha on digital images derived from lidar data captured from 1998 to 2014.
The visible banks fell within a larger plot depicted as an orchard on the 19th century maps available to the survey. The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period or the 19th century. The orchard remained lightly planted in 1947 and retained a sparse cover of trees on digital images derived aerial photographs of 2014.
