Summary

The remains of ridges possibly made for fruit tree planting and improved drainage from the post-medieval to mid-19th century date were visible as subtle parallel earthwork banks on digital images derived from lidar data captured from 1998 to 2014, east of Land Farm, Membury parish.

The visible eathworks did not correspond with a plot depicted as an orchard. Plot 977 was listed as arable.

The remains of parallel ridges up to circa 5 metres apart were visible as very subtle earthwork banks over an area of less than 0.1ha on digital images derived from lidar data captured from 1998 to 2014.
The visible banks did not correspond with a plot depicted as an orchard on the 19th century maps available to the survey and the plot was not planted with any trees in the 1940s. The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks possibly made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period but out of use and converted to arable cultivation by the early 19th century.
