The remains of parallel ridges were visible as very subtle earthwork banks in two former plots west of Goodmans House, Membury parish, on aerial photographs of 1996 and digital images derived from aerial photographs of 1999 and lidar data captured from 1998 to 2014.
The larger eastern plot covered an area of circa 1.5 ha area and the banks were circa 3 metres apart, aligned circa north-west to south-east, cross contour. The western plot covered an area of circa 037 ha area and the banks were circa 5 metres apart, aligned circa south -west to north –east in longer, curvilinear arcs, arranged to also cross the contours of the slope.
The visible banks did not correspond with plots depicted as orchards on the 19th century maps available to the survey, both plots listed as arable on the Tithe Apportionment for Membury (plots 878 and 879).
The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as the remains of banks possibly made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage, dating possibly from the post-medieval period but out of use and converted to arable cultivation by the early 19th century.
