HER Number:MDV119516
Name:Prehistoric Gullies at Island Farm, Ottery St Mary

Summary

Four gullies were recorded in Area 4 during excavations on land at Island Farm prior to development. Only one of the gullies produced any finds, namely two pieces of prehistoric flint. While these could be residual, the gullies appear to align with potentially prehistoric gullies recorded elsewhere on the site and may, therefore, also be representative of a prehistoric field system.

Full description

Hayes, C., 2016, Land at Island Farm, Ottery St Mary, Devon. Archaeology Assessment Report and Updated Project Design, 21-22 (Report - Excavation). SDV360260.

Four gullies (W, X, Y, Z) were recorded in Area 4 during excavations on land at Island Farm prior to development. The excavation area was targeted on features containing prehistoric material revealed during an earlier evaluation. Gullies X and Y, aligned north-east/south-west, corresponded to features identified in the evaluation. Gully W and Z were in line, running broadly north-south and of different sizes. All the gullies had a single fill. No finds were recovered from them during the excavation but two prehistoric worked flakes of chert were found in Gully X during the evaluation. While the finds could be residual, the gullies are parallell and perpendicular to similar gullies in Area 3 in which prehistoric flints were also found. All the gullies, therefore, are possibly representative of a prehistoric field system. See report for full details.
