An irregularly shaped pit circa 75 by 50 metres in size was visible as an earthwork and cropmark on aerial photographs of 1971 onwards, on the north-west-facing slopes south of Burridge, Chardstock parish.
The visible earthwork does not correspond with any extractive feature depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey. The pit is therefore interpreted as the remains of an extractive pit, of post-medieval to 19th century date that had passed out of use by the late-19th century. The gelology in this location might support an interpretation as a chalk or limestone pit.
The pit was visible as very slight earthworks on digital images visualised from photogrammetrically derived elevation data captured in 2014, and has probably been reduced by ploughing.
