A roughly triangular pit circa 85 by 40 metres in size was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1971 and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016, west of Marsh Farm, Yarcombe parish.
The visible earthwork does not correspond with any pit shown on the 19th century maps available to the survey. However, hachures shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map within the farmstead might support the interpretation that the pit is actually more substantial and that the farm buildings are located within its former extent.
The visible pit is therefore interpreted as the remains, possibly partial, of an extensive extractive pit of post-medieval to 19th century date that had passed out of use by the mid-19th century.
