Name:Pillow Mound south of Hawns Farmstead, Cornwood

Summary

Pillow mound to the south of the Medieval field system associated with Hawns farmstead. Measures 13.3 metres long by 5.5 metres wide and 0.8 metres high lies with long axis across the contours on south-west facing slope. Shallow drainage ditches flank this feature. Discovered and surveyed as part of the RCHME Hawns and Dendles project in 1997.

Fletcher, M. + Newman, P. + Probert, S., 1998, Hawns and Dendles: An Archaeological Survey by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, 18, Appendix 2 (Report - Survey). SDV346246.

(21/01/1998) SX?61506203. A pillow mound located on a steep SE-facing slope in deciduous woodland. It measures 13.3m long but it is truncated by a track at its downslope end. The turf-covered rectangular stony mound is 5.5m wide and on average 0.8m high; two fairly mature trees grow out of the top. Traces of a silted ditch about 0.25m deep flank the mound. Discovered during field investigation in 1997.
