Eggesford house site.

Vis=19/9/1973(os) three authorities disagree on the siting of the mansion. There is an extensive depression which probably indicates site of house and although no trace of building foundations this is where one would expect the original house to have been. The depression is 0.5m deep (osa).

The old eggesford house was demolished about 1832 when the hon newton fellowes built the present eggesford house (ss61se19), which is actually in the parish of wembworthy. It probably stood in front of the large walled garden which remains on the hillside near the church (nmr, citing hoskins).

Axe, M. + Chapman, L. + Miller, S., 1995, The Lost Houses of Eggesford (Unknown). SDV338846.

Recent documentary and field research proves that the house, at least in the 18th century, stood just to the west of the church, south of the lane to Eggesford Barton. More than one phase of house. Edward Chichester built a "fayre" house in the 1620s. A 1626 datestone bearing his initials is now at Eggesford Barton. This probably replaced an earlier Reigny/Chichester house. Excavation and map evidence may put the 1626 house to the north of the 1718 one, beside Rose Cottage. In 1718 a new house was built by William Fellowes. This was refurbished in the 1790s and was visited by Swete in 1797. There are plans and paintings of this house. It was built of red brick. The Fellowes-Wallops moved their seat to the current Eggesford House in 1820-28. The old site was lost to view. In recent times soil from a bungalow site was used to level humps and bumps west of the church.

Clark, J. + Richardson, D., 2013, Eggesford House (Un-published). SDV357040.

White (1850) noted that ‘Old Eggesford House was the seat of the Lords Chichester in the 17th century, and was rebuilt by W. Fellowes, Esq., in 1718, but was taken down about 26 years ago. In 1806 Polwhele wrote that it was ‘built about the year 1718 of brick'.

McLean, I., Unknown, Fieldwalking (Worksheet). SDV11073.
