Full description

Smith, N., 1991, Survey Report of Sites and Monuments on Ugborough Moor and within woodlands at Owley, Peek Moor Gate and Pennaton Bridge, 14-15, plan (Report - Survey). SDV360448.

Sunken area measuring approximately 60 metres by 25 metres, bordered to the north-west, south-west and north-east by a substantial earth wall/bank. Seems to have served as an enormous settling pit. An outlet ‘drain’ is visible running into the Glazebrook, buried beneath the adjacent raised bank in the pit’s south-eastern corner. In the north-west corner a ditch cut through the dividing earth bank connecting this area (C) to area D (to the north-west) which itself also appears to have served a similar processing function. A sluice most likely once controlled the flow of water from D to C within the ditch, the latter lying at a significantly lower level. Water must have been channelled from the Glazebrook into D at some point, but the exact position is unknown.
