Full description
COMMENT ON AM7, NO.295, Untitled Source (Report - Survey). SDV68180.
At brightley barton, site of chapel of st. Mary. Vis=estimated -/-/1908(chanter) the ruins of a private chapel. Vis=estimated -/-/1821(lysons) the ancient chapel still stands. Vis=9/12/1953(os) the ruin at south end of east wing is generally accepted to be the old chapel. Position seems improbable no sign of entrance from domestic range. It is a roofless ruin of stone with doorway in west wall, dimensions 9.4m x 5.0m and max height 3.0m. Ivy covered and with no visible ecclesiastical or dateable features. Vis=10/11/1970(os) site uncertain the ruin is a n-s orientated windowless structure more like a storehouse than a chapel. Bishop brantygham granted a licence for a chapel at brightley in 14th century. Site unknown. According to polwhele the chapel was still used in 1800. Now an outer wall in ruin.(tregelles and andrews). Vis=unknown (ancient monuments). Adjoining the moat to the se is the very featureless and ruinous "chapel", deep in earth and rubble. It does not look medieval.(comment on am7, no.295).
