Traces of narrow straight cultivation marks in fields to the north west of Highampton are visible on aerial photographs (p1) and were digitally plotted as part of the National Mapping Programme. For the most part these are visible only as crop marks, but in one field survive as low earthworks. The features, which are likely to be modern in origin, lie within an area classed as rough ground showing signs of earlier use as agricultural land in the Historic Landscape Characterisation for Devon.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2017-2018, Backlog recording of the Winkleigh National Mapping Programme Survey (Personal Comment). SDV360588.

The cultivation marks mentioned within this record by Young & Turner likely refer to the 19th-20th century practice involving the (mechanical) ploughing of ground for the improvement of drainage and or areas of rough ground. This monument record has accordingly been indexed as narrow ridge and furrow.
