Barrow Number BF 4 one of group of five.

Whybrow, C., 1971, Untitled Source, 14 (Article in Serial). SDV343043.

Excavated in 1971 when a square burial pit was found under an unexpectedly large cairn only thinly covered with soil. In the pit were the cremated bone and other burnt material laid on a large flat stone with a rough timber base.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1973, SS63NE1 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV343040.

Now turf covered with diameter of 10 metres and height 0.3 metres.

Quinnell, H., 1982, Untitled Source (Correspondence). SDV343044.

Barrow excavated in 1971 with a ditch and central cremation with sherds of Trevisker style pottery. Carbon 14 date of 2832 +/- 42 BP (uncalibrated) was obtained from the charcoal associated with the cremation (BM-1148). All papers and finds from excavation are with H Quinnell for joint publication by Whybrow and Quinnell in due course.

Grinsell, L. V., 1983, The Barrows of South and East Devon, 45 (Article in Serial). SDV337013.

Quinnell, H., 1997, Excavations of an Exmoor barrow and ring cairn, 1-15 (Article in Serial). SDV343046.

Four significant features of the 1971 excavation were: a) the relationship of the ditch to the mound b) the suggested composite stone and wood cist c) the presence of deliberately broken pottery with the cremation and d) the late 11th to 10th BC date. Finds included 76 sherds from one vessel of Style 4 of the Trevisker Series and nine flint implements including two scrapers and five flakes.

A group of four Bronze Age grass-covered barrows is visible situated on high ground south of Cape of Good Hope Farm, Bratton Fleming. All measure approximately 10 metres in diameter and up to 0.5 metres high. One is thought to have been excavated and a cremation and burial goods recovered. Other details: Number 34485.
