Parallel cultivation marks of probable post medieval origin are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (p1) to the east of Smallmarsh. They were digitally plotted during the National Mapping Programme and are sited within an area described as C18th and C19th post-medieval enclosures in the Historic Landscape Characterisation for Devon.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2017-2018, Backlog recording of the Winkleigh National Mapping Programme Survey (Personal Comment). SDV360588.

The ridge and furrow mentioned within this record by Young & Turner more likely represents evidence of improvement ridge and furrow, a common 19th-20th century practice involving the (mechanical) ploughing of ground for the improvement of drainage and or areas of rough ground. This monument record has accordingly been indexed as narrow ridge and furrow so as not to be confused with ridge and furrow typical of the medieval period.
