Summary

Two earthworks of 19th to early 20th century quarries are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946, at Ferndown, Chittlehampton. The western earthwork corresponds with a feature shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map and on the Second Edition Ordnance Survey map two earthworks labelled as 'Quarry' are shown.

The western earthwork corresponds with a feature on this map.

A quarry is marked at this location on the OS 2nd Edition 1:2500 scale map. It is visible as an extant feature on aerial photographs (p1) and was digitally plotted during the National Mapping Programme. NMP. A second quarry lies 50m to the west of the first, it is marked only as rough ground and unanotated hachures on the OS map. The quarries are considered likely to be of late C19 or early C20 origin. The features are sited within an area described as C18th and C19th post-medieval enclosures in the Historic Landscape Characterisation for Devon.
