Summary

A circular arrangement of trees which form part of an ornamental tree ring of possible 19th-20th century date, within the grounds of Ashridge Court, North Tawton, is visible on aerial photographs taken from 1947 onwards.

A circle of at least 42 trees is visible on aerial photos (p1,3). Evergreens, of paler colour than surrounding woodland. The trees are visible on photographs from 1946 to at least 1992. They are not mapped on 1907 6" OS mapping, although a tree of the same species sited in the centre of the ring, is marked in the correct spot in 1907. It is likely that the circle was planted as an ornamental landscape feature in the early 20th century. The trees have been digitally plotted as part of the National Mapping Programme.
