Granite cross head found in a gateway on the ancient ridge road ne of modbury. Removed for safety to shilston barton. It is one of the spurred type which seems to be confined to the s edge of dartmoor and to the south hams. Resembles spurrell's cross, ermington (sx65sw/6/2), the churchyard cross, stoke fleming (sx84ne/1/3) and the cross head at south allington, chivelstone (sx73ne/8). It has an iron ring inserted in the apex and presumably once served as a gate fastening. Octagonal in section, with spurs, 16" high, 19 1/4" across the arms and 8" thick (masson phillips).

Shilston Barton SX674536
A cross head found in a gateway on the ancient ridge road north-east of Modbury was moved to Shilston Barton. Not found at Shilston Barton in 2009; the current owner has no recollection of the cross head. The house and gardens were undergoing renovations in 2009, at the rear of the buildings are several heaps of granite, a large part of which have been dressed. A search of these heaps was made without success, the outbuildings have been converted into dwellings and the Devon Rural Archive have a converted barn (opened in 2007); they also have no knowledge of the cross head.
