Garland was the birthplace of john garland, grammarian, poet and alchemist, professor at toulouse university 1229-31 (hoskins). Vis=30/6/1993 (emafu) site of manor house. Residence of john de garland 1040, poet. Low undulations in 2 small fields nw of manor house may be associated with earlier residence. Two blocked wells at ss70871795. Good metalled track said to be former road to chulmleigh by present farm owners. Farm hasn't been modernised - mainly mid-19c by appearance. Tm shows more buildings and different buildings. Farmers say stone all over area of farmhouse - mainly permanent pasture. The landowners have only found impressed bronze plaque with impressions of man blowing horn from round tower (simpson).

The garland estate, chumleigh, belonged to the farland family until nearly 1700 (lysons).
