Narrow curvilinear ditches are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1948 and 1995 as earthworks on the southeast and south facing combe slopes northeast of Wash Farm, Staverton. The visible earthworks correspond in part with, but extend beyond, water channels depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25-inch map. The channels roughly follow the contours of the combe and are interpreted as the gutters of a catch meadow irrigation system, tapping a water course to the northeast of the system. Catch meadows were popular in the 19th century but many continued in use into the mid-20th century. The gutters appear to have passed out of use prior to the 1940s.
