Narrow linear and sinuous ditches are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1948 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 on the southwest facing combe slopes to the southeast of Lower Combe, Staverton. The parallel channels roughly follow the contours of the combe and are interpreted as the gutters of a catch meadow irrigation system, possibly associated with the farmstead of Lower Combe. Catch meadows were popular in the 19th century but many continued in use into the mid-20th century. The catch meadow is possibly fed by a watercourse which extends from Lower Combe towards the northwest extent of the system and shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map. The catch meadow does not appear to be active on aerial photographs taken in 1948, so had possibly passed out of use by this time.
