An extensive area of linear earthwork banks and ditches interpreted as relict medieval field boundaries and strip fields is visible on aerial photographs taken from 1995 onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, at Beaston, Broadhempston. The earthworks are typically north to south and east to west aligned, mostly between 5m to 15m in width and occupy an area of approximately 30 hectares to the north and south of Beaston. The earthworks are mostly interpreted as former field boundaries, although a number of earthworks to the north are visible as much broader, elongated banks of possible strip fields, up to 25m in width, and bound by linear ditches. The earthworks closely respect the historic field patterns shown on the 1841 Parish Tithe Map, characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields, although the majority of the earthworks are not shown on this map, supporting the interpretation that the field boundaries and strip fields had largely passed out of use by this time. Earthwork banks defining a small rectilinear enclosure at Beaston Cross, circa 40m in length by 30m in width and interpreted as the possible remains of a former medieval dwelling which had also passed out of use by the mid-19th century, were also recorded .
