Two pits are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1979, south of the Orangery in Obelisk Plantation, Mamhead. The larger pit, circa 50 by 25 metres in size, corresponds with a pond depicted on the Tithe Map for Mamhead. A mound, possibly a spoil heap, is visible adjacent to the northern edge of the eastern, smaller pit. It is possible both pits are evidence of former extractive activity, probably of post-medieval to 19th century date.
A larger ornamental pond 40m to the north was not recorded by the survey.
The earthworks are obscured by dense tree cover on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2010.
