Linear earthworks interpreted as tree-planting banks of former post-medieval or 19th century orchards are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, to the northeast of Castleford, Ipplepen. The parallel northeast to southwest aligned earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established for increased soil depth and improved drainage, are spaced between 4m to 8m apart and are situated on gentle northwest and southwest facing slope. They correspond with land parcels 1451 recorded as ‘Bladders Orchard’ and 1453 as ‘Long Park Orchard’. Orchards are also shown in this location on the Ordnance First Edition Map, although have been partly cleared by the time of the Second Edition OS map. The orchards have been further thinned out on aerial imagery captured between 2015-2017, although trees are extant within the northern orchard. A single linear bank which was recorded in-between the two areas of transcribed earthworks has been interpreted as the remains of a possible orchard, or former field boundary and has been included within the monument polygon.
