Name:Field Boundary south-east of Inner Park Copse, Bishopsteignton

Summary

A curvilinear bank, visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 and more clearly as a defined earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, is interpreted as the remains of a medieval field boundary that went out of use before the mid-19th century.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.

A broad curvilinear earthwork bank, in parts up to approximately 8 metres wide, is visible in two segments on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, but only indistinctly visible as a pale cropmark on aerial photographs taken in 1946. It fits into the field pattern and is interpreted as a relict field boundary. Its curvilinear shape indicates a likely medieval origin, but it is not depicted on the Tithe map and any field boundary here probably went out of use before the mid-19th century.
