Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Parallel earthwork ridges, circa 5m wide, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, to the west of Lakewater Cross, Broadhempston. The visible banks are closely spaced and are aligned across the contours of the southwest facing combe slope, occupying an area of approximately 0.10 hectares. The banks correspond with land parcels 129 and 130 on the Broadhempston Tithe Map and both recorded as ‘Lake Water Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment of the mid-19th century. No evidence for an orchard is, however, shown in this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map of the late 19th century and had evidently been cleared by this time. The earthworks are interpreted as possible post-medieval or 19th century tree planting banks of an orchard, the fruit trees being established on the banks for increased soil depth and improved drainage.
