Sub-oval and irregularly shaped earthwork pits, between 30m to 45m in length, are visible on digital imagery derived from aerial photographs taken between 1946-1949 and from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, to the east of Newhouse, Broadhempston. The earthworks do not correspond with any features shown in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe map or First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the late 19th century. They are interpreted as possible extractive pits of post-medieval or 19th century date which had passed out of use by the mid-19th century. The earthworks do, however, correspond, with the records of two prehistoric barrows noted in this location (MDV13773 & MDV13774) and visible as ‘round mounds’. No evidence for barrow like features was visible on the available imagery and it is likely they have been mis-interpreted and are, in fact, evidence of extraction.
