Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Earthworks of sub-oval shaped pits, between 7-30m in length, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, in two concentrations to the north and south of Orley Common, Denbury and Torbryan. The northern-most pit corresponds with an earthwork labelled as a ‘Quarry’ on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25-inch map, and other earthworks labelled as Quarry’, ‘Old Quarry’ (MDV48045) and ‘Orley Quarry’ (MDV48046) are also shown in this area. This supports the interpretation that the pits represent evidence that small-scale post-medieval or 19th century limestone quarrying was carried out on Orley Common, which had passed out of use by the late-19th century.
