Linear and curvilinear plough-spread earthwork banks, between 6-25m in width, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, to the southeast of Orley House, Ipplepen. The earthworks are typically northeast to southwest aligned and are broadly in keeping with the historic field pattern depicted in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map which is characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields. The earthworks do not correspond with any linear features shown on this map, or on subsequent available historic maps and they are therefore interpreted as possible relict medieval field boundaries which had passed out of use by the mid-19th century. Given their proximity to a prehistoric field system recorded 100m to the northwest on Orley Common (MDV19187), however, it cannot be dis-countered that these field boundaries may have earlier origins.
