HER Number:MDV122569
Name:Field boundaries, at Wrigwell Cross, Ipplepen

Summary

Earthworks of banks and ditches interpreted as relict medieval or post-medieval field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1965 and digital images derived from LiDAR data captured between 1998 and 2017, at Wrigwell Cross, Ipplepen. Three linear anomalies corresponding with LiDAR data were also recorded by a geophysical survey undertaken to the north-west of Wrigwell Cross in 2022.

Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • FIELD BOUNDARY (Early Medieval to Post Medieval - 1066 AD to 1750 AD)

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The northwestern-most earthwork partly corresponds with a field boundary in this location.

Royal Air Force, 1965, RAF/58/7109, RAF/58/7109 F41 071-72 22-NOV-1965 (Aerial Photograph). SDV351186.

Earthworks are visible.

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX8366; SX8466 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 31-MAY-2017 (Cartographic). SDV361470.

Earthworks of banks and ditches are visible.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (AI&M) (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Linear earthwork banks and ditches, between 3-7m in width, are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1965 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, at Wrigwell Cross, Ipplepen. The earthworks are mostly northwest to southeast aligned and are in keeping with the historic field pattern depicted in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map which is characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields. Only the northwestern-most earthwork corresponds with a field boundary shown on this map. This supports the interpretation that the earthworks, which are interpreted as relict medieval or post-medieval field boundaries, had largely passed out of use by the mid-19th century.

Cockcroft, T., 2022, Land at Blackstone Cross, Ipplepen, Devon: Geophysical Survey Report, 5, Fig, 4 (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV365670.

Three possible former field boundaries were recorded as linear anomalies in a geophysical survey undertaken in July 2022 [to the north-west of Wrigwell Cross] which has been outlined for development. However, it is also possible that they represent land drains.
Although no field boundaries are recorded within the site, linear depressions are visible on LiDAR which correspond with the anomalies.
