Earthworks of sub-oval and irregularly shaped pits, between 7-35m in length, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, dispersed across circa 5 hectares on a limestone plateau, to the south of Beltor Cross, Ipplepen. The southwestern earthwork corresponds with a pit feature shown on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map and earthworks labelled as Quarry’ (MDV49123), ‘Beltor Quarry’ (MDV49121) and ‘Hannaford’s Hill Quarry’ (MDV49122) are also shown in this area on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map. This supports the interpretation that the pits represent evidence that dispersed small-scale post-medieval or 19th century limestone quarrying was carried out in this area, which had passed out of use by the mid to late-19th century. The quarries are located amongst the earthwork remains of a possible prehistoric field system (MDV31028).
