Parallel earthwork ridges, circa 6m wide, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, on south facing slope at Dornafield Cross, Ipplepen. The visible banks are closely spaced and are cross-aligned to both the north to south and east to west. The banks coincide with an orchard depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map and are interpreted as possible 19th century tree planting banks for an orchard, the fruit trees being established on the banks for increased soil depth and improved drainage. The orchard has been almost completely cleared of trees on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken between 1946-1949.
