Banks and ditches are visible on aerial photographs of 1946 and images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, as earthworks crossing a narrow combe on either bank of the France Brook, to the west of Higher Ashton, Ashton. The banks are up to circa 5m wide and circa 45m long. The bank north of the stream is flanked by a shallow ditch of similar width. The visible earthworks do not correspond with any boundary depicted on the Tithe Map for Ashton or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map but are in keeping with the character of the surrounding field pattern. They are interpreted as the remains of a field boundary of probable post-medieval to 19th century date that had been cleared by the 1840s.
