Linear and curvilinear hollows and banks, from 3m to circa 7m wide, are visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 as subtle earthworks obliquely crossing the contours of a south-facing slope to the east of Higher Ashton, Ashton.
The visible earthworks correspond in part with field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Ashton, but are mostly not depicted on the historic maps available to the survey. The relict earthworks are in keeping with the character of the surrounding field pattern, which has been characterised as medieval enclosure based on strip-fields. As such they are interpreted as the remains of a field boundaries of probable medieval origin that had been mostly cleared by the 1840s.
