Full description
Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.
The visible earthworks correspond with a boundary depicted on the Tithe map for Ashton.

A curvilinear hollow or scarp is visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s and images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, as an earthwork up to circa 9m wide and 125m long on the north-west facing combe slopes to the north of Coombe Farm, Higher Ashton.
The visible earthwork corresponds with a field boundary depicted on the Tithe Map for Ashton but not the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25-inch map of circa 1888. The relict earthworks are also in keeping with the character of the surrounding field pattern, which has been characterised as medieval enclosure based on strip-fields.
As such the earthwork is interpreted as the remains of a field boundary of probable medieval origin that had was cleared between the 1840s and 1880s.
