An irregularly shaped pit or hollow is visible on images derived from Lidar data of 2013 as a shallow earthwork on the south-west facing slopes to the north of Amberly Farm, Chudleigh. The slight earthwork corresponds with a plot listed and depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey as an orchard. It was common practice from the post-medieval period to the 19th century to use former extractive pits as orchards, to provide greater shelter for the fruit trees. This earthwork is therefore interpreted as a possible former extractive pit, possibly associated with a lime kiln to the south-east, of possible post-medieval to 19th century date.
Later small quarry pits are visible within, and adjacent to the broader earthwork, recorded separately.
