Irregularly shaped pits or hollows up to 55m long and 16m wide, are visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s as shallow earthworks within an orchard to the south of Shipney Lane, Chudleigh.
It was common practice from the post-medieval period to the 19th century to establish orchards on and around former extractive pits, partly to provide greater shelter for the fruit trees and partly for a profitable use of otherwise unproductive land. The plot in which the pits are visible was listed as Ash Park Orchard on the Tithe Map for Chudleigh. The visible earthworks are therefore interpreted as possible former extractive pits, possibly limestone quarries of post-medieval to 19th century date, associated with a former lime kiln to the south-east, that passed out use prior to 1840.
