Summary

(17/07/1995) SX57567496 An inscribed boundary stone which lies flush with the surface of the road - part of the Transmitter Station at North Hessary Tor.
This dressed granite stone measures 0.2m square and has the letters DCP, 0.1m high above a broad arrow.
Brewer (1986) concludes that the letters refer to 'Directors of Convict Prisons' but he gives no dates.

Erected after 1867 when the enlarged bounds of the prison were marked with 'DCP' stones. This unique example Consists of an 8.5 inch square stone set flush into the road surface at the entrance to the roadway to North Hessary Tor. Brewer records that this stone was said to have formerly been in the wall fronting on to the road but when the road up to Hessary Tor was made up, the wall was set further back, in the 1950s, when the television mast was erected.
Could not be seen in October 2001 - roadway resurfaced. Inscribed 'DCP'. Photograph included. Note the arrow is above the letters on this example.
