Parallel earthwork ridges, circa 5m wide, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, at Combe, Bickington. The visible banks are closely spaced and are aligned parallel with the contours of the southeast facing combe slope, occupying an area of approximately 0.08 hectares. The banks coincide with land parcel 446 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map and recorded as ‘Higher Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment, although an orchard is not shown in this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25-inch map. They are interpreted as possible 19th century tree planting banks for an orchard, the fruit trees being established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage, which had passed out of use by the late 19th century.
