Parallel earthwork ridges, circa 4m wide, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, at Lower Herebere, Bickington. The visible banks are closely spaced, northeast to southwest aligned and occupy an area of circa 0.10 hectares of southeast facing slope. The banks coincide with land parcel 549 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map and recorded as ‘Lower Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment and an orchard is shown in this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map of the late 19th century. They are interpreted as possible 19th century tree planting banks for an orchard, the fruit trees being established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage. The orchard remains covered in fruit trees on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken between 2015-2017.
