A group of sub-oval and irregularly shaped pits, ranging from 8m to 110m in length, are visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, at West Hill, Ogwell. The earthworks do not correspond with any pit features in this location on the available 19th and early 20th century historic mapping, although earthworks are recorded in proximity on the Parish Tithe Map and First Edition Ordnance Survey map, the latter showing earthworks labelled as ‘West Hill Quarry’ and ‘Quarry’. This supports the interpretation the earthworks represent evidence of post-medieval or 19th century quarrying for possible limestone extraction. The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover.
