A group of five irregularly shaped pits, ranging from 30m to 50m in length, are visible as earthworks on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, at Bradley Barton, Newton Abbot. The eastern-most earthwork corresponds with land parcel 852 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map and recorded as ‘Quarry’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. This supports the interpretation that the remaining earthworks represent evidence of post-medieval or 19th century quarrying for possible limestone extraction which had likely passed out of use by the mid-to later 19th century. The earthworks are not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover in this location.
